Design Registration

The short answer: a registered design protects the appearance of a product — its shape, configuration, pattern or ornamentation — not the method of making it and not its function. In Hong Kong protection runs up to 25 years, renewed every 5 years, and a certificate usually issues within about 3 months. The critical point: file before you publish, use or manufacture, because only a new design can be registered.

  • What is protected: the appearance, not the method or the technical function
  • Term: up to 25 years, renewed every 5 years
  • Timing: about 3 months to the certificate
  • Timing matters: file before disclosure or sale, or novelty may be lost
