Trademark Services: from search to registration, one team
The short answer: a Hong Kong trademark takes about 6 months from filing to registration, at HK$2,500 for the first class and HK$1,500 for each additional class. We run a free search and class advice first, and quote only after the risks are clear. The firm was founded in 1998, has handled over 4,000 IP matters, and is led by senior partner Mr. Benny Kong, with offices in Hong Kong and Shenzhen covering 36 countries and regions.

What the quote covers
Filing a trademark looks like filling in one form. In practice there are seven steps between the search and the certificate, and our quote covers all of them:
- Search and risk assessment: we check the word, the device and the classes, list the earlier marks that may block you, and tell you honestly how strong the case is instead of simply urging you to file.
- Class advice: based on what you actually sell now plus your short-term expansion. Too few classes leave gaps; too many mean paying for classes you never use.
- Filing: we prepare the representation, the goods and services specification, declarations and authorisations in one go, so you do not receive a deficiency notice.
- Office action replies: if a deficiency notice or an examiner's report arrives, we draft the written reply and the amendments.
- Publication and opposition: if someone opposes during the 3-month publication period, we file the counter-statement and evidence; we also oppose on your behalf.
- Renewal and recordals: we remind you before the 10-year expiry and handle changes of name, address, assignment and licence recordals.
- Monitoring and enforcement: we watch the official journal, alert you to similar applications, and issue warning letters or investigate infringement when needed.
Fees and timing (key markets)
| Market | First class (HK$) |
Extra class (HK$) |
Timing | Term |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong | 2,500 | 1,500 | 6 months | 10 years |
| China | 2,000 | 2,000 | about 10 months | 10 years |
| Taiwan | 5,500 | 4,500 | about 6 months | 10 years |
| Macau | 5,200 | 2,800 | about 9 months | 7 years |
The table shows current fees; see the trademark fee list for other countries and regions. Macau also requires a notarised power of attorney (HK$1,900). Once a quote is confirmed, no undisclosed items are added later.
Five stages, and where cases stall
- Filing (same day): you obtain a filing date and number. Priority is decided by that date, so filing early always helps.
- Formality examination: documents only. A deficiency notice must be answered within 2 months.
- Substantive examination: distinctiveness and conflicts with earlier marks. This is where most cases stall, often for several months of correspondence.
- Publication: open to opposition for 3 months; once missed, an opposition cannot be filed.
- Registration: if no opposition is filed, the certificate issues and the mark is protected for 10 years, renewable.
The whole Hong Kong process takes about 6 months, but the real variable is the substantive examination correspondence. If your mark is descriptive or close to an earlier one, search before filing rather than waiting for the examiner's report.

Frequently asked questions
Q1: Can I just file online myself?
Yes, the official form is not complicated. The real risk comes before filing: the wrong classes, a specification that is too narrow or too broad, or a conflict with an earlier mark that only surfaces when an examiner's report or an opposition arrives, by which time remedies cost far more.
Q2: The search found a similar mark. Does that mean I cannot register?
Not necessarily. It depends on whether the goods or services overlap, how close the overall impression is, and whether the other side actually uses the mark. Adjusting the device, narrowing the specification or agreeing coexistence can solve some cases, and the search report sets out the options.
Q3: Is one class enough?
Start from what you actually sell or provide. A single class leaves the rest of your product lines unprotected; paying for classes you do not trade in is simply waste.
Q4: Does registration cover every product automatically?
No. Protection is limited to the goods and services in the registration, which matters greatly when you later enforce the mark.
Q5: What if I receive an opposition?
Look at the grounds and the deadline first (in Hong Kong, generally 3 months from the notice). You can defend fully, restrict the specification, agree coexistence or withdraw. See opposing a trademark application for the procedure and deadlines.
